This project guide is a combination of those two articles and it covers replacing the existing roof decking installing underlayment and ice dam protection laying the first row laying shingles in the field flashing ridge shingles and vents and more.
How to shingle an angled roof.
If you live in an area with inclement weather you should consider using a special ice and water protector.
Nail each side of the shingle to each side of the ridge just below the shingles self sealing strip.
Weave and cut the valley on the highest side of the roof.
Cut the shingles so that both edges of the upper overlap part have an inward angle.
Place the first shingle end flush to the edge of the roof.
Using your staple gun secure the felt to the roof.
Asphalt roofing shingles simply rely on the force of gravity to shed water from rain or snow melt.
A couple of weeks ago we published a two part series showing how a local roofing contractor shingled a roof with architectural shingles.
At a very low slope any water on the roof whether rain water or snow melt drains very slowly and there is a risk of lateral water movement.
Start by overlapping a starter from both sides of the valley at the bottom.
Start by laying asphalt felt or other underlayment over the roof.
The challenge with very low sloped roofs is simple gravity.
Install new flashing metal.
To secure each angled shingle i drive one staple or shingle nail at least 2 inches above the lower edge of the next shingle course and into the top corner of the step flashing.
You want to lay the shingles from the bottom to the top of the valley.
To cut your own just cut down multi flap shingles into individual shingles.
Why is 2 12 the minimum.
Then your first shingle goes on the side you are going to cut.
The next one goes on the low side.
Shingles on a steeper roof also tend to weather at a slower rate due to their favorable angle to the sun s rays.
Overlap each row at least 3 to 4 inches.
If the roof shingles and all accessory roof components are arranged and overlapped with this in mind the roof should successfully shed water.
Another key to having the roof drain effectively while making this detail look professional is to create a consistent gap between the roofing and the cedar shingle siding.
